Employment and Economy

  • Unemployment levels are typically double the NI average – Over the last decade and beyond, unemployment in the Council area has remained significantly higher than average.  A review of the economic data for the area confirms that 6.5% of the rural population are unemployed compared to 7.4% for the Council area and 5% for NI as a whole

    • An over reliance on the public sector – 35% of people in the Council area are employed in the public sector compared the 4th highest among District Councils in Northern Ireland;
  • Emerging strengths in Creative Industries, Renewable Energies/Sustainable Technologies and Health Technologies and Innovation/Stratified Medicine.  The North West has largely developed through indigenous growth and public sector support in the aforementioned sectors. 

  • Urban/Rural Divide - Approximately 32% of population live in rural areas
    • 10 rural wards are within the top 50% most deprived in terms of employment
