Sustainable and Connected City Region

  • Advanced digital infrastructure – Significant investment in internet connectivity in recent years. 
    • Derry~Londonderry has the largest concentration of IT companies outside of Belfast with large employers in this sector including Seagate, Allstate, Fujitsu and KOFAX
    • Emerging strengths in Creative Industries, Renewable Energies/Sustainable Technologies and Health Technologies and Innovation/Stratified Medicine.  The North West has largely developed through indigenous growth and public sector support in the aforementioned sectors. E.g. the establishment of the Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre to support the life sciences, NORIBIC’s Creative Incubator and the New Science Park;
  • Not Spot: However many of the rural areas in the new Council area suffer from poor or no access to broadband; and
  • Proximity to services: all rural wards are within the top 50% most deprived in NI.  Many rural people can’t simply access the jobs in the City.
